SEO had its gold rush in 2005. AEO’s happening now. Here’s how to actually get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews.

If you’ve been in marketing long enough, this year feels like a rerun. Back in the early 2000s, everyone was scrambling to figure out keywords, backlinks, and whatever “PageRank” actually meant. Nobody had a playbook. The tools were clunky. The rules changed every few months, and half of what you learned in a webinar was already outdated by the time you tried it. The brands that leaned in anyway, even messily, ended up owning search for the next decade.
We’re watching that exact movie again with a new lead actor. This time it’s not Google’s blue links deciding who wins. It’s ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews deciding who gets mentioned when someone asks “who’s the best [your category] company.”
What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization (also called GEO, Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring your content, site, and online presence so AI assistants cite, quote, or recommend your brand when they generate an answer. Same underlying idea as SEO, different scoreboard.
Nobody has this fully figured out yet. But the shape of what works is starting to come into focus, and the brands paying attention now are going to have a head start that’s genuinely hard to catch later.
The numbers back up what you’re probably already feeling in your gut. Google’s AI Overviews now show up on roughly half of U.S. searches, and a growing share of buyers, especially in B2B, start their research inside a chatbot instead of a search bar. People are asking AI the way they used to ask a well-connected friend: “who should I actually use for this?”
The old goal was ranking #1. The new goal is being the answer. Getting your brand named, cited, or recommended when an AI assistant responds to someone’s question. And the mechanics of how that happens are still shifting week to week, which, again, sounds a whole lot like 2005.
A whole category of “AI visibility” platforms has popped up to track this, the same way rank trackers popped up during the SEO gold rush. A few worth knowing:
Here’s the catch worth remembering before you buy any of them: they’re good at telling you whether you’re showing up, not so great at telling you how to fix it if you’re not. The dashboards diagnose. They don’t treat. That part’s still on us.
Here’s what gets lost in a lot of the AEO hype: the fundamentals are still the fundamentals. Good content. A well-built website. A real social presence. AI tools are pulling from the same open web Google has always crawled. They’re just weighing and synthesizing it differently. If your content and site structure were sloppy before, they’re still sloppy now, just invisible in a whole new way.
So no, you don’t get to skip the boring stuff. You just get more stuff on top of it.
This is the real shift, and the one that matters most when we talk to clients about it.
AI models weigh real human experience more heavily than polished marketing copy, because that’s what actually helps them answer a question well. Which means the brands showing up as trustworthy sources aren’t the ones with the slickest brand voice guidelines. They’re the ones actually present: responding to comments, showing up in communities, being a real company with a real human behind the wheel.
Set it and forget it social scheduling used to be a mild annoyance to your audience. Now it’s actively working against your visibility. If someone comments on your post and gets crickets, or worse, a canned reply that clearly came from a bot, that’s not a missed engagement anymore. It’s a missed signal.
Reddit is the clearest proof of this. It’s become the single most-cited source across every major AI engine: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s AI Overviews all lean on it heavily, and Google recently started quoting Reddit threads directly inside AI Overviews, attributed by subreddit and username. Why? Because Reddit is one of the last places online that’s still full of unpolished, specific, first-hand experience, which happens to be exactly what AI systems are built to surface. And it cuts both ways: Reddit users can spot a corporate account faking authenticity from a mile away. You can’t astroturf your way onto this list. You actually have to show up, be useful, and let people see there’s a real person typing.
Press releases, sponsored placements in local or national outlets, getting quoted in an industry publication. This stuff still matters, arguably more than it used to. AI models weigh authority and corroboration heavily. Your own website saying “we’re the best” carries basically zero weight. A handful of independent, credible sources saying it about you? That’s the currency now. Same logic as old-school PR and link building, just running through a different algorithm.
SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links. AEO optimizes for being quoted inside a generated answer. It sits on top of SEO rather than replacing it: the same crawlable, well-structured, authoritative content that ranks well in Google is the raw material AI engines pull from to build their answers.
Specific, self-contained, well-structured content beats vague, sprawling content. Clear answers to clear questions, original data, and content formatted in scannable chunks (think tight sections and lists, not one giant wall of text) all get pulled into AI answers more often than generic overviews.
No. You need to keep doing it well, and add real presence and third-party validation on top. Good content, a strong site, and an active social presence remain the foundation. AEO is what you build on that foundation, not a replacement for it.
That’s us. Fireball builds AEO into a client’s broader digital footprint: content structure, authority signals, technical foundation, tracking, and ongoing management, so a brand shows up consistently whether someone’s searching on Google or asking ChatGPT.
AEO isn’t a checklist you complete once. It’s not a plugin, a meta tag, or a one-time audit. It’s an extension of everything good marketing has always required: quality content, a strong web presence, real community engagement, and credible third-party validation, with one new, non-negotiable requirement stacked on top. You actually have to show up. Real humans, real conversations, real responses.
The brands willing to do that, starting now, are the ones AI assistants will be recommending a year from now. Just like the early SEO adopters two decades ago, the head start is the whole game.
